Maranatha @ Washburn

#14 Marantha (18-1) vs Washburn (10-8)

These teams are on two different paths as Washburn is having a down year after reaching the State Championship game last year. While Maranatha is looking like one of the best teams in the state, after failing to even make section finals last season with top seed in the section. This game features two great match-ups.   Game Review This game was really good. As both teams came in thinking they should win this game. Washburn had the momentum the majority of the game but Maranatha never back down or let down and made the right plays. Maranatha won the turnover battle 12-10 over Washburn in the close game. Maranatha out scored Washburn 11-5 in over time. This was won and lost at the free throw line. Washburn was up 66-60 with less then 1:00 left in regulation.

Maranatha  This was truly a team win for Marantha. Isaiah Hanson 24pts made big shoots down the stretch as Marantha pulled back into the game to tie it up for the overtime victory.Garrison Gillard 18pts 5ast was not on his A game offensively but made up by making plays for others and on defense. Jeremiah Hanson 11pts made a big 3 at the end of regulation and had a solid game. Josh Goldschmidt has hard time playing against Washburn guards.  Gramtham Gillard 21pts 3ast 4reb prove the he can score against more athletic teams and win games from the free throw line. Maranatha gets a win that assures they will be the #1 seed through sections and the State tournament.

Washburn  Washburn played a solid game but gave this one away. Washburn got good contributions from the team with 4 players in double digit scoring  Nick Anderson, Even Shepherd with 13pts Noah Scarver 10pts and Jeff Jones 14 who kept them in the game in the first half. The Battle for the Twin Cities
The last 6-7 years Minneapolis city conference has dominated by Washburn as well as Johnson is dominated Saint Paul City conference. Both teams winning state titles during this run  The 2012-13 is a whole new game as Johnson nor Washburn have the lead for the conference title. The race for the Minneapolis City conference title is led by Southwest High School and the Saint Paul to City conference title is led by Highland Park. Could be this year we get a match up other than Washburn vs Johnson in the Twin Cities Championship. It's hard to argue that there is not a battle for the cities going on.

The Classic Lake conference vs Field
The lake conference is the most competitive basketball conference in Minnesota. The lake conference has had representative in the state tournament semifinals each of last 6 years. Lake conference has had 2 teams make the State tournament the last 3 seasons. Lake Conference teams this year have 14  losses total out of conference play, 6 of them coming from Wayzata. Edina, Minnetonka, Hopkins and Eden Prairie all are capable of making runs for the Minnesota State Title this year. Osseo, Apple Valley, Park Center and Roseville all leading their own conferences and will not face the competition that the Classic Lake teams will face during their conference schedule and going into sections. So when it comes to competing for the state title I'll put the odds on a Classic Lake team winning it all.

Game Review

Maranatha If that's the best 1A has for the Mustangs, they will be cutting down the nets in March 2013. One of the most balanced team games played this season with 4 players in double figures as Maranatha played their A game. Isaiah Hanson 19pts shot 8/12 from from the field and was a dominate force against Heritage Christian. Garrison Gillard had a complete game looking like one of the top guards in the state with 22pts 7ast 4reb and 3stl with 1 turnover. Grantham Gillard guarded all position and had impact with 12pts 6reb 5ast only 2 turnovers. Maranatha had 26 assist and 12 turnovers and played with great pace. This team is for real and have a good chance of finishing the season undefeated.

Heritage Christian This was not their best showing as Heritage was careless with the ball as their best players did not take care of the ball. Zach Weld had a solid game with 17 but was 2/8 from deep 4 less makes then his last game a win against Maranatha with 5 turnovers. Christian Pieper went 1/10 with 3pts and Brad Basco had 18 pts but shot 7/18 with 4 turnovers. Heritage Christian could not keep up the scoring place and did not have good night from deep shooting 5/26.Heritage Christian is a solid team and should bounce back from this knowing that they will get a rematch later this season.
